Overcast and Cold
A later than normal start for me at Lakeside Park as I decided to pick up some rubber boots at Walmart to aid my ability to walk on the rain-soaked and waterlogged ground. The cloud cover was broken when I parked my car, but that intermittent light was soon overtaken by a thick grey cover of drizzling clouds. I decided to make the best of it, turned up the ISO on my Pentax and prepared myself for some grainy photos.
The main problem in light this low is my ability to obtain focus with my manual 500mm lens. Judging focus while looking through the small eyepiece is really difficult, and getting any sharp photos in this light has more to do with luck than skill. I was able to capture a half-decent photo of a northern flicker with its feathers fluffed out to keep warm. It was cold and windy this morning:
This really is a good time for birdwatching at Lakeside Park, there is so much activity. This bird, at first glance, appears to be a flycatcher or kingbird, but there is no white on the tip of its tail for it to be a kingbird and no colour on its chest for a flycatcher, so I'm going to say that it's a new bird for me, either an eastern phoebe or an eastern wood-pewee:
There are lots of small warblers passing through at the moment and it is quite hard to pick them out from the movement of the falling and wind-blown leaves. This is the only half-decent photo I was able to keep out of all the shots I took. I believe it is a Nashville warbler:
The weather today was a cold, windy and damp reminder of the weather I was used to in the northeast of England, but I did get to see a new bird this morning and also got to field test my rubber boots, which did keep my feet nice and dry.
