Home all Day

With no opportunity to leave my house today, I decided to record some of the wildlife visiting our garden. I used my macro camera (Pentax k200d) attached to a manual focus 350mm soligor lens which gave less detail at 10 megapixels compared to the camera I normally use at Lakeside Park which has a full 20 megapixels. This is our resident chipmunk who we often see on our deck cleaning up the leftovers from our bird feeders:


Male and female cardinals occasionally flew in for a quick snack:


House sparrows also came to feed and bathe in the drinking water:


These house finches are always here, they tend to dominate the feeders:


I was happy to see a bluejay call in:


A downy woodpecker also spent some time in the garden, hunting through every nook and cranny for insects:


I ventured outside with my macro camera to see what I could find. A funnel-web spider waiting for its next meal:


Yesterday's post included photos of a treehopper which I could not identify correctly, this photo though is definitely of a buffalo treehopper. I found it on our patch of raspberry bushes:


The hickory tussock moth caterpillars that I have been photographing at Lakeside Park are also in evidence on the leaves of our apple tree:

A Kingfisher's Blind Spot

The belted kingfisher is a bird that I regularly see and hear every morning at Lakeside Park. They give off flashes of white from their flight feathers that contrast against the shaded trees on the far bank of Shoemaker Lake, as they swoop from perch to perch,. They call when they approach anywhere near, warning others that I'm there. I feel at times that they are mocking me... I see you! Their eyesight is so keen that it is almost impossible to get close enough for a photo, from any angle. Hide and Seek

Do birds play? Young animals do, so why not birds? This family of young wrens appeared to be having a great time playing this morning: Darting in and out of cover, chasing each other. Perhaps honing their survival skills: The split in a dead tree trunk, which looked as if it had been folded in half, made the perfect hiding place: I am no expert when it comes to Canadian birds. You can probably tell from my accent that I am from the UK, and I am still learning all about the birds in Ontario. So, if anyone can help identify this bird then please let me know: A juvenile, but I am not sure if it is a flycatcher or an oriole? It was seen feeding on the same mulberry bushes as in my post yesterday. I also found a few bushes at the side of the trail on my way home with some fruit within arms reach. Thrushes and Blue-Winged Teal

I must admit that I am no expert when it comes to thrushes in Ontario. I am well acquainted with thrushes in the UK, but these guys have completely different names. I will do my best to hopefully identify correctly. There are I believe two possible candidates,  Swainson's thrush and the hermit thrush. Very similar-looking birds. One outstanding difference between them appears to be a white ring around the eye of the hermit thrush compared to a buffy eyering on Swainson's thrush. Another distinguishing detail is the colour of their tailfeathers. The hermit thrush has more of a cinnamon colour to its tailfeathers, and this photo does show that. A white eyering and cinnamon tailfeathers, I'm going with a hermit thrush. This photo also shows both the cinnamon tailfeathers and the white eyering.
